Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred The Internet is buzzing about Dragon Naturally Speaking 10, a new release of the Voice Recognition Software used by millions of people to do everything from send emails to dictate from operating rooms. Dragon Naturally Speaking sounds like something that you’d read about in a Science Fiction novel, something Robert Heinlein might have dreamed up in the 70s, but it’s for real. Most people speak about 120 words a minute but type an average of 40 words a minute. Imagine being able to create your blog posts as fast as you can speak the words, with accuracy as high as 99 percent!

Nuance, the creator of Dragon Naturally Speaking, hosts a free typing test on their website so you can see how much faster you would be if you used Dragon. I hadn’t taken a typing test since the mid-90s when I was applying for a new position at the Credit Union, so I was eager to take Dragon’s typing speed test! What were my results? I type 70 words a minute, which is much faster than I thought. Here’s something that occurred to me that would be SUCH a good reason to buy this software-when Kaitlyn was born, I had just started my blog Table for Five. Do you know that I typed my posts ONE HANDED for MONTHS while I held her? Do you know how great it would have been to just put on a noise-cancelling headset and SPEAK my blog posts? Or say “send email to Chris Edwards” and have Dragon OPEN Outlook for me, open a new mail message, insert Chris’ email address, and then create the email for me? It’s like science fiction, right? Only it’s REAL! Here’s some videos you can watch to see for yourself:

MacSpeech DictateDon’t worry, Mac Users, there’s a version for you too. This could be the thing that takes blogging into a whole new dimension. Because Dragon Naturally Speaking can convert MP3 and WAV files into text, you could dictate your blog posts and send your emails even while on the road. This is just very, very cool. Maybe Santa will be nice to me this year and leave a Dragon under my Christmas tree :)
